An awesome Slopestyle Snowboard final in one of the biggest Snowparks in Europe on Mount Corvatsch, Silvaplana Switzerland. The perfectly shaped Slopestyle gave all the 30 finalist a challenge but they all presented top level riding.

The final of the 4Star TTR event at the Engadinsnow was won by Nuutti Niemelä from Finland with a run of : On the first jump, the biggest kicker of the Slopestyle, with a gap of 18 meters Nuutti showed a backside 1080° Indy Grab. On the second obstacle a Frontside 540° Indy Nosebone and on the third kicker he showed a Frontside 1080° Mute Grab. On the last obstacle before the finish, a spine, he showed a Backside 360° Stalefish Grab. With a score of 96.8 points he won the competition well-deserved and with a big lead of 12.6 points ahead of runner-up Matthias Vogt from Germany, who also showed a spectacular run: starting with a Switch Frontside 900° Indy Grab on the first kicker, followed by a Backside 720° Backside Grab and a Frontside 900° Nute Grab on the following obstacles. Matthias finished his run with a high and stylish backside air.

The third place was taken by the upcoming Swiss youngster David Hablützel from Zurich. He started his run with a Switch Backside 900° Mute Grab. On the next two impressive kickers he stood out with a Backside 720° Indy Grab, a Frontside 360° Stalefish Grab and on the spine he showed a Frontside Rodeo 540° Backside Grab. The winner of the ladies was Abby Lockhart from New Zealand who managed to collect important points at the 4 star TTR event for the World Tour ranking. She showed the jury a good run and won ahead of the best swiss rider Tina Ramholt on second place.

The snowboard contest season has started, Europe finally got some snow, and preparations are in full swing for the 13th annual Burton European Open (BEO) presented by MINI, taking place from Feb. 25th – March 3rd, 2012 at LAAX in Switzerland. To make sure all riders have plenty of time to register to compete at this world-class snowboard event, the BEO has extended the online registration process until January 14th, 2012.

To register to compete, snowboarders should head to www.opensnowboarding.com and look for the BEO page. Registration is open for juniors, men and women in the pre-qualification rounds for both halfpipe and slopestyle.

At the BEO, snowboarders who make it through pre-qualifiers and qualifiers will have the chance to take home a piece of the $125,000 prize purse, in addition to valuable points towards the TTR and Burton Global Open Series (BGOS) ranking lists. Also at the BEO, riders will compete for the second generation of the Creative Use of Space Award, presented by MINI. This season’s Creative Use of Space (CUOS) Award once again draws on the MINI philosophy of utilizing space intelligently. Prize money for the Creative Use of Space Award will go to the male and female riders who throw down the most progressive tricks in the halfpipe and slopestyle competitions at the BEO. In addition, the resort crew that builds the most creative CUOS slopestyle feature during the BGOS series will win $5,000.

The snowboarding community has been awaiting a decision on the heated topic of the inclusion of slopestyle in the Olympic games in Sochi 2014. The debate is one of high importance especially for the competitve side of snowboarding.

The TTR has long been acquainted with competitive slopestyle on a global level.   Events on the TTR World Tour have been running world-class slopestyle competitions reaching back to the early 1990’s.  In the 2009/2010 season alone, the TTR held 148 slopestyle competitions on the calendar where 2,100 men and 655 women competed adding up to 5,307 individual results for the season. With the number of quality slopestyle events that are run each year by the TTR and the amount of riders who continually turn out to compete each season, the TTR’s knowledge and expertise of slopestyle is unparalleled.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) confirmed today the inclusion of ski slopestyle (men and women), slopestyle (men and women), and snowboard parallel special slalom (men and women) on the sports programme of the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.

The decision was taken by the IOC Executive Board (EB) ahead of the 123rd IOC Session in Durban, South Africa, and follows the inclusion in April of ski halfpipe (men and women), women’s ski jumping, biathlon mixed relay, figure skating team event and luge team relay.

“We are very pleased with the addition of ski and snowboard slopestyle and snowboard special slalom in the Olympic Winter Games programme,” said IOC President Jacques Rogge. “Such events provide great entertainment for the spectators and add further youthful appeal to our already action-packed lineup of Olympic winter sports. We look forward to welcoming all the athletes to Sochi in 2014.”

For 2010/11, major events on the Swatch TTR World Tour have agreed to work together to expand and implement the Snowboarding Live Scoring System (SLS) for all halfpipe, slopestyle and big air competitions for the upcoming 2010/11 season.  The Live Scoring System is planned to be introduced across all 6Star TTR events in an effort to break down barriers posed by the current Overall Impression system and to improve the presentation and understanding of competitive freestyle snowboarding as a whole.

The Swatch TTR 6Star Burton European Open Snowboarding Championships 2010 went down last week in Laax, Switzerland. 08/09 TTR World Snowboard Champion Peetu Piiroinen won the slopestyle with style and consistent runs, closely followed by Norwegians Mikkel Bang and Gjermund Braaten. Scandianavian podium dominance could only be stopped by Switzerland’s Iouri Podladtchikov. Will Peetu with his huge points lead be able to hold on to the No. 1 position once the US boys get back on the Tour in the end of February? Right now, Finland and Norway take 1st and 2nd in the TTR top nations ranking, America in 3rd. That might be the first time ever. For the girls it’s equally, if not more exciting. Sarka, Sina, Lisa, Cheryl, and Cilka are only little points apart and double 6Star Slopestyle Champion 2010, Enni Rukajärvi is hot on their heals.
