Event History
The Nanshan Open began 6 years ago when a small group of friends from all over the world got together for what would be the first snowboard event on Chinese soil. That was in 2002 and even though fewer than 20 riders took part and most were riding for the first season of their lives, no one could anticipate what was in store for this small but soon to be influential event in the world of snowboarding.
In its short history the Nanshan Open has become a world-class event, drawing a roster of top riders and sponsors who have helped make some big progress in what was one of the most under developed snowboard scene in the world. Last season the TTR took the Open into its roster as a 3 star event prompting Red Bull to step up as the title sponsor and putting the event at a whole new level. This year will be bigger and better than ever, with a 4 star status and Red Bull back for more, the event that is known for having the best hospitality for its guests will get you ready for backside powder burners and inverted switch rodeo 720 back scratchers.
The small group that makes this event possible is a combo of foreign experts and a local core team. Tommy “Mellow” Marsh designs a park which is now internationally known for having perfect kickers and some imaginative obstacles, the likes of which have never been seen anywhere else. The park was one of the first to be completed in the Northern Hemisphere last season and had some of the nicest lines in the world last December and January. All of this would not be possible without the local know-how of Marco Huang, local park shaper and one of the best riders in the country. This perfect foreign-Chinese team does what many have tried and failed here in the PRC, creating a perfect freestyle playground and continuously pushing the limits.
With the help of massive media attention and the high quality of event infrastructure, the Red Bull Nanshan Open has single-handedly put snowboarding on the map in China. The contest that has experienced more “firsts” than most other events combined and opened the doors for the industry now offers a hefty prize purse and a trip of a lifetime. We won’t bore you with the details; instead we invite you to experience the Nanshan Open for yourself. Check out www.mellowparks.cn for information on how to get here, or contact steve@mellow.at to inquire about participating in one of the most original event sunder the sun.
“The China trip was definitely a top 3 trip for me ever.” – Danny Larson
“Never before have I been to a contest where I’ve been taken such good care of as in Nanshan this winter. Not only was the park epic, but also the people and all the extra happenings at the event” – Jonte Edvardson
“The Chinese people remind me of the early 90’s when snowboarding just started. There is a buzz around it, like the good old days. Nothing but positive passion for this great shredding activity. I’m looking forward to experiencing this wild country once again.” – Marc Andre Tarte.
