Event History

The Burton New Zealand Open is an established annual event within the Burton family and again has been assigned 5Stars on the Swatch TTR Tour. With 5 years already under its belt, the New Zealand Open will not only start off the Burton Global Open Series, a series of six events worldwide, but will also be the kick-off event to the 08/09 Swatch TTR World Snowboard Tour. All following five events of the Global Open Series are also part of TTR Tour.

This year’s event is located at the resort Snow Park NZ and comprises of Half Pipe, Quarter Pipe and Slopestyle disciplines. All disciplines are open to every male and female rider wanting to participate. However, only the Halfpipe and Slopestyle results account for the women’s and men’s TTR rankings. Running from Tuesday 29th July through to Saturday 2nd August (Sunday the 3rd is the bad weather day), the 2008 Burton New Zealand Open yet again promises to be the pinnacle of the New Zealand winter calendar: Competition gets underway on Wednesday July 30 with the men’s and women’s halfpipe qualifiers. On Thursday July 31 the action moves to Snow Park NZ’s newly designed slopestyle course for the qualifiers followed by the Slopestyle Semi-finals and Finals on Friday August 1. Friday night will see awe-inspiring massive air in the invitational quarterpipe under floodlights with live music from top New Zealand DJ’s. Spectators can watch all the action for free from a specially created grandstand carved out of snow. All eyes will be on the Superpipe Semi-finals and Finals on Saturday August 2 when the world’s best will fight it out for the Open title and a share of the NZ$50,000 prize purse.

The action is just as exciting off-snow with the Gravis Open Sessions featuring some of the biggest names in Kiwi music every night of the Burton NZ Open, from the launch party on July 29 to the wrap celebrations on August 2.

TTR Burton New Zealand Open 2010 - Halfpipe Finals

The men dropped into the pipe in the afternoon and perfect weather conditions continued for the men's field. Iouri Padladchikov (SUI) had a little trouble on his first run but came back to take the top spot with his second drop putting down a huge crippler, double McTwist 1260, frontside 1080 tailgrab, and a Cab 720. With today's result, Podladtchikov moved into World No. 1 in the Swatch TTR Rankings sitting behind current leader, Gjermund Braaten (NOR) Japanese riders were out in full force and young 14-year old ripper, Taku Hiraoka, gave the men's field a run for their money. He threw down an excellent run to take second place. And, American rider, Louie Vito, stepped it up with his second run to take home the third spot on the podium. Today's halfpipe competition marked the debut of the new Snowboard Live Scoring system (SLS), which takes a new approach to judging halfpipe runs. Instead of looking at a rider's overall run like the Overall Impression system, the new SLS system scores each hit in a rider's run which are then combined with an overall flow score in order to provide a clear definition of how the judges arrive at a final score. TTR Is Settling The Score At Burton NZ Open

Following the successful launch of the Snowboarding Live Scoring System™ at The Oakley Arctic Challenge slopestyle last winter, major events on the Swatch TTR World Tour have agreed to work together to expand and implement the system for all halfpipe, slopestyle and big air competitions for the upcoming 2010/11 season. The Live Scoring System is planned to be introduced across all 6Star TTR events in an effort to break down barriers posed by the current Overall Impression system and to improve the presentation and understanding of competitive freestyle snowboarding as a whole.In a tight partnership between TTR, the World Snowboard Federation, the events, judges and riders, the Live Scoring System was developed as a completely new way to judge snowboarding. The current system in use, called Overall Impression, focuses on a rider's run in its entirety and provides little to no feedback to riders or spectators on how a score is generated. The new Live Scoring System is more transparent and allows everyone to clearly see how judges give points by scoring each trick individually in a rider's run. Each trick score is added up to generate a total trick score that is then combined with a total flow score (how well a rider links all tricks in the run) to make up the final score for a rider's run.The Live Scoring system will be used for the first time in both halfpipe and slopestyle at the 2010 Burton New Zealand Open.For full event results, news, videos and updates keep your eyes glued to the http://www.ttrworldtour.com website.

TTR Burton New Zealand Open 2010 Promo

Now in it's eighth year, the BNZO, which runs over 5 days and offers a NZ$50,000 prize purse, consists of both Slopestyle and Halfpipe. All comers can battle it through pre-qualifiers and qualifiers running Weds 11th and Thurs 12th August, for the few available spots to compete alongside the elite riders who are seeded directly to the semi-finals stage. The semi-finals and finals of Slopestyle run on Friday 13th and Halfpipe on Saturday 14th August. Official training for the event starts Tuesday 10th August. Chas Guldemond was also hosting part of the show and threw down an epic slopestly run in Snowpark's nice little setup and could only be beaten by Mikkel Bang and Charles Reid.
