Event History
Five years ago, Steve Zdarsky and a few of his friends gathered together for the first snowboard event on Chinese soil. That was in 2002, and while there were only about 20 local riders involved in the very small contest, in the very small but first snow park in the country, no one could foresee what lied ahead. For in 5 short years, the Nanshan Open has become a world class event, drawing a roster of top riders and international media attention.
There have been a lot of ‘firsts’ in the history of this event. For instance, in 2005 the organizers welcomed the first international pros to participate on Chinese soil. It was also the first event to offer a prize purse and now, with the involvement of TTR, the Nanshan Open will be the first event in China to have international judging standards. In previous years, the locals judged the pros and vice versa. The event and the locals have both grown out of this grass-roots approach and the Nanshan Open expanded accordingly.
Nanshan Ski Resort is located 30 minutes from the capital and is by far the most well-known and most visited resort in the country. The Nokia Nanshan Mellow Park is the countries finest snowboard facility and with this season’s renovation which relocated over 30,000 cubic meters of earth the park now has an international standard kicker line, over 12 rails and boxes, shred car, jib nub, wall ride and an 80 meter long hand shaped halfpipe. The Nanshan Park is definitely living up to its reputation of the best park in China, 5 years running.
The event has grown over the years and it’s only through the high involvement of the local Beijing snowboard scene that the event will set new standards again this year. The goal is to bring together the international world class snowboarding with the local scene and help develop the snowboarding in China.
