A fresh face on the Swatch TTR Tour, the Slovenian Cilka Sadar appeared on the TTR event circuit with a bang in 2008/2009, finishing her winter in an impressive World No 12. She competed at many of the 6Star events and placed 8th at the 6Star Burton European Open halfpipe. Her skills are consistently improving and she can confidently tackle both halfpipe and slopestyle formats.
Cilka’s background as a gymnast has surely helped her along her way as she has paved her way through this seasons events. In 2009/2010 she has nailed some heavy results, such as 2nd Place at the 6Star O’Neill Evolution halfpipe and 4th place in the halfpipes of both 6Star Burton European Open and 5Star Burton Canadian Open. She is a down to earth, yet highly motivated competitor and is one to keep an eye out for on the TTR Tour. She also had a spot to ride at the Vancouver Olympics, which is a nice achievement from the 18 year old.She finished in 17th place in Vancouver. Her Swatch TTR season ended in World No. 9 but with yet another top 10 finish at the Burton New Zealand Open, it remains to see where Cilka will go in 2010/11.
INTERVIEW WITH CILKA IN JANUARY 2010

You are from Slovenia. The country is getting more well known for their snowboarding scene. How did you get into snowboarding and who thought you your first steps and tricks on the board?

I used to train gymnastics and after I quit, when I was 13, I tried lots of different sports. After a year I found snowboarding the most interesting so I concentrated just on that.
Some Hansi from Austria thought me first turns and next season I signed up in a snowboarding club in my hometown and they thought me my first tricks.

Where do you usually ride and with who?
When Im at home I usually go to Vogel, otherwise I'm just riding where the competitions are, or depends where snow is.
I like to ride with my friends from back home, but when I'm away I like to hang out with Sarka because she motivates me with her positive energy and with Marko, because he knows a lot and can help me a lot too.

What is the snowboard scene in Slovenia like?
Its not big, but its getting better every year. We have a lot of snowboarding clubs, we have 3 parks and kids know a lot about the snowboarding scene abroad.

You are in the Slovenian National Team and will represent your country at the Olympics in 2010. How does this affect your riding goals in general and your training?
Last year after World Championship I got an opportunity to qualify for the Olympics. Trainings changed a bit, I rode more in pipe than slopestyle. My goal for Vancouver is just to do the best that I can, because I still think I am a beginner at all this stuff so I rather don’t expect too much.

Beside the Olympics Games, what are your goals for your snowboard career? Where would you like to see yourself on the TTR Tour?
In the upcoming season I would like to do my best on the TTR, I wanna finish in the top.

How and when did you begin your competitive snowboarding career?
I started in 2007, with some Big Air European cups in Innsbruck I think.

Since 2007, you have been in many contests on the TTR Tour and outside of it. What is the most thrilling part of contests for you? Do you have plans for filming or photo shoots?
I think contests are good for young riders to prove themselves and I think its good to be a bit competitive, it can help you with different stuff in your life. I would really like to film and shoot too.

How did you end up competing outside Slovenia?
My coach gave me a ride abroad.

How did you find your first sponsors? Which part was particularly difficult when you started your professional snowboard career and which was easy?
My friend helped me to write an email to a local store dealer, I had a meeting and I got a snowboard for free.:)
Im not a professional yet, but I think dealing with all the sponsors alone it is difficult, because you have to represent yourself in the best way you can and shouldn’t sound too confident at the same time. Easy part with me is that I have the family that supports me and help me a lot.

You are still going to school. How do you combine the two things and is it your goal to make snowboarding your career once you have graduated?
I still go to a normal high school. Always in the beginning of the school year I talk to all the professors and let them know my situation. I can pick the dates of exams by myself, that’s how they make my education easier.:)
I will still try to do my best in snowboarding after my graduation, but I will apply to the university too, because Im scared I would get to lazy if I don’t apply straight away.

</ttrRiderRanking:bio>

<ttrRiderRanking:portrait>http://www.ttrworldtour.com/typo3temp/GB/K_1c6a8cf769.png</ttrRiderRanking:portrait>
<ttrRiderRanking:bio>Kjersti is an international snowboard superstar, known for her smooth style and great attitude. She is clearly one of the true ambassadors of the snowboarding world. For Kjersti snowboarding is all about having fun with friends, the lifestyle, the creativity and the freedom. Although she likes to do well in contests, being recognised as a progressive, creative and stylish rider is what matters most to her.
Kjersti Buaas started riding in 1994 and soon after, in 1996 she won a local big jump contest, receiving her first sponsorship. She started travelling around competing in some contests, winning the World Junior Championships in 1999 which launched her international career. In 2000 she signed her first professional snowboard contract, and she won her first World Cup contest that same year. She then secured her place as the most stylish female ripper out there at the Winter Olympics in Salt lake, pulling the biggest Air to Fakies ever seen by a girl and finishing just outside the podium in 4th place.
Kjersti finished 4th in the 06/07 TTR Ranking by posting one sick 6Star result after another, completing her title race with two 5th places at the final event of last season's TTR Women's World Snowboard Tour, the Roxy Chicken Jam in Park City, Utah.
In 07/08 Kjersti had another solid season, posting a series of consistent results. She beat out a star studded field when she took out the 6Star Burton U.S Open and Slopestyle and also proved her versatility by winning the Halfpipe at the 3Star Norwegian Championships. These wins, combined with a series of other results helped her finish in 4th position for the second year running.
With some newly learned tricks in her bag, like the BS 7, her strength in all formats (just check those career statistics) and her attitude towards competitions, Kjersti returned in the 08/09 Season as one of the hottest competitors on the scene. She has placed 3rd in the Slopestyle and 2nd in the Halfpipe at the 6Star Burton European Open and continued with top 10 finishes at TTR and non-TTR all over the world including a victory at the prestigious 6 Star TTR Burton US Open and a win in the halfpipe of the FIS World Cup in La Molina, Spain. Goin g into the last contest as one of the hottest title contenders, Kjersti dropped into the halfpipe of the Roxy Chicken Jam but injured her knee and could not collect many points. However, she showed true motivation by finishing both runs in the slopestyle and halfpipe only to get those precious TTR points in the end. She ended her season in World No. 5.
Back in 09/10 after her injury, Kjersti is more motivated than ever collecting good results at international events again, including top 5 finished at the Winter Dew Tour and X-Games U.S. and Europe. Among her best TTR finishes are a third place at the 6Star Roxy Chicken Jam in Europe and a a 4th place in the 6Star halfpipe of the O'Neill Evolution. In 09/10, Kjersti misses the TTR Top 5 by inches in World No. 6.
Kjersti is definitely a TTR favourite, ready to push it, progress and possibly even claim the next women's TTR Tour Title. The 3rd place in Slopestyle of the 5Star Burton New Zealand Open 2010 might just give her the right kick off result for her 2010/11 season.

</ttrRiderRanking:bio>

I grew up in Flims and I had the mountains just in front of my door. I really like my home town and I love the backcountry in Laax. I enjoy every day snowboarding in Laax and I love to shred with my friends!
What age did you start snowboarding?
I started snowboarding when I was about 6 years old. My father inspired me, when he learned it. I thought I had to learn it too, because it looks cool. So I started with my mother and from the day one I love snowboarding!
What snowboarders do you most look up to?
I really Nicolas Müller riding, Everything looks so smooth and stylish! We live at the same place so I enjoy every day when we snowboard together. My big inspiration when I was younger was my dad. He learned me how to do it!
What do you focus on most - slopestyle? Pipe? Big Air? and why?
I focus on riding slopestyle. I love this discipline! You can create your own run and at every contest you have to show or create a new run because every slopestyle is different. I enjoy riding the pipe as well. Every single season I try to be focused on learning new tricks but I also try to go out in the backcountry to films or shoot something.
What is your most memorable snowboarding experience?
I have a lot of memorable snowboard experience. I still can remember the day, when I started at the Burton European in 2006 in Laax. It was my first big contest and I won the Girls Slopestyle and couldn’t believe it. The whole week was a big inspiration for me. I never thought I had enough skills and talent to be a pro. After this week I was super motivated to train hard to become a professional snowboarder.
Your on the road a lot throughout the season - what is your favourite place to visit and why?
I love the summer. I really like to be on the beach and go surfing. Two of the nicest cities are Barcelona and New York. Since I've been in New York I almost go there every year to compete at the US Open and I visit New York in spring time.
Fläsch is one of my favourite towns in Switzerland. My grandmother and cousins live there. Every time I visit, I see all of my family members and we have at least a coffee together. Fläsch is a little small town with a huge character.
What does a normal day consist of for you when your not snowboarding?
A normal day for me means go to school in Chur. I study at the “Pädagogische Fachhochschule”. I love to do something for my brain besides snowboarding and I love to work with children, so I can’t wait to teach children.
How has TTR affected your snowboarding career?
Every year I try to compete at all 6* events. For me this means a lot and my goal is to win the tour one day. All the TTR Events are well organized and the courses are in a very good shape! It is nice to have a TTR ranking and a tour. This helps a lot to get the snowboard sport more famous and understood by the public.</ttrRiderRanking:bio>

<ttrRiderRanking:portrait>http://www.ttrworldtour.com/typo3temp/GB/S_67c827bba1.png</ttrRiderRanking:portrait>
<ttrRiderRanking:bio>Sarka Pancochova is the new rising star on the Swatch TTR Tour, and with seasoned vets like Tina Ramholt (SUI) and Martin Cernik (CZE) pushing her to step up, it’s no surprise that this 19-year-old Czech rider is finding her place at the center of the world stage.

Sarka grew up putting in the hours at her local mountain, Morava Pico in Czech, where she fast developed into one of the craziest little rippers on the mountain, going huge off the kickers and hitting gnarly rails with the best of them. Looking at Sarka’s early contest results you can see that she dominated most of the local contests she entered, and as is the story with the TTR groms, if you dominate your local contest scene, it’s only a matter of time before the sponsors come banging on your door and you’re on your way to the big time. The sponsors did indeed come calling, and before she knew it she was jet-setting round the globe, showing the world what Czech shredding is all about.

In 07/08 Sarka gained huge recognition outside of the Czech Republic, taking out the 3Star Quiksilver Snowjam and both the Protest and O2 World Rookie Fests, whilst posting a ton of other impressive results, showing Europe, and the world that she was a force to be reckoned. She spent her summer in New Zealand and Saas Fee training for the 08/09 season’s Northern Hemisphere events and the hard work paid off for her at the 4Star Pleasure Jam, in Dachstein, where she unleashed a silky smooth Switch BS 180 and BS 7, backed up by another FS 7, to claim first place and announce her arrival to the big league. She performed consistently in both slopestyle and halfpipe events throughout the winter finishing the 08/09 season at World No. 8 making sure the industry, media and fans were aware of this new Czech talent.

2009/2010 Sarka is back stronger than ever and she started off in the Southern Hemisphere with a 7th place at the 5Star Burton New Zealand Open slopestyle and a 2nd place at the 3Star Billabong BroDown. A 4th place at the 4Star Horsefeathers Pleasure Jam lifted her into the TTR Tour lead, where she stayed for 11 weeks for the first time in her career. She went on to take 4th at the Roxy Chicken Jam slopestyle in Saalbach and then she had her first 6Star podium moment with a 3rd place at the Burton European Open slopestyle. In the 09/10 season Sarka was like many athletes balancing her TTR commitments with Olympic qualifying events and swinging by the Olympics (taking 14th place). Her fifth place in the slopestyle of the Roxy Chicken Jam US, the final 6Star event for women in 09/10, and an eight place at the slopestyle of the Burton US Open, pushed Sarka into the final TTR Top 3 in World No. 3, one step closer to her goal of becoming TTR World Champion one day. Thanks to her final season ranking, Sarka will be invited to all major competitions on the Tour next year and received prize money of $ 15,000 USD.
Sarka’s the No. 1 female representing Czech right now and with skills and abilities like hers, going bigger and spinning smoother than most girls her age, she’s able to battle it out with the girls she’s grown up idolizing. She has snowboarding in her blood, and with plenty of points already posted, and an exciting desire to push female riding to the next level (read: double back flips) eyes will be glued to Sarka as she amps up the contest levels, putting pressure on her heroes.

INTERVIEW WIHT SARKA IN DEC 2009

1. You recently took out the 4Star Horsefeathers Pleasure Jam in Dachstein, Austria. That contest was stacked with some premier TTR female riders and you managed to beat them all! How did you feel when you won? How did it compare to your other 2Star and 3Star contest wins?

It was a really good feeling, my first really big contest. This contest was fun, many friends of mine and good park conditions. This was my best result until now.

2. During the contest we saw you stomp a BS 7 to FS 7, some super impressive tricks. Have you been training hard? What other stuff can we expect to see from you this season?

Yeah I was in New Zealand this summer for pipe training, and also I was in Saas Fee, there were some good kickers so I was pushing it all summer. You will be really surprised at what I will do in the next contests.

3. Your are always charging the big kickers and starting to get a reputation as a girl as who is not afraid to put your body on the line. What would you say motivates you when you’re snowboarding?
I think my friends motivate and push me to ride the most. I couldn´t be as good as I am without them. I also love snowboarding and air time on big kickers. This also pushes me, as does stomping new tricks.

4. You have been riding with Tina Ramholt (SUI) a lot lately, another a charging female rider on the Tour. Do you motivate each other?

Yes I love riding with her, she is a really good rider and she pushes me to do better stuff for sure. It is so much fun when we ride together I hope we can ride all competitions together and win.

5. You are from The Czech Republic, a country that is fast developing into a powerhouse of European Snowboarding. Can you tell us a bit about what it has been like to be a rider coming up in Czech Republic?

We have some good parks where you can ride, but the problem was that the last two winters we didn´t have enough snow. Luckily for me I have good sponsors, Nugget, Flow, Bern and Spy, they are like my family and have helped me so much.

6. When did you realize that you could have a career as professional snowboarder?

When I started to win every contest in Czech, then I went aboard and
it also was not so hard to win.

7. What do you want to achieve with your snowboarding career?

I would like to go to the Olympic Games and also get some good results in the TTR rankings. I would like to advance girls snowboarding to a higher level whilst also focusing on improving my style.

8. When did you first start competing? How have competitions changed since then?

I started competing about two years ago at some locals comps in Czech and since then my snowboarding has changed so much. The first times were good in Czech because I won everything, but later it got boring. I wanted to be good aboard and this was break point for me to leave Czech.

9. What does snowboarding mean to you?

It’s my life, I love it, I can´t be without snowboarding, for me it’s like food, something I need. You always know if you have some troubles you just go and ride and during the riding your troubles are gone, just riding and nothing else.

10. Who are your favourite riders and why?

I don’t have a favourite rider, but some riders like Markku Koski, Eero Ettala are so good, specially Markku, he really knows what snowboarding means and I like it. Also Martin Cernik, a Czech rider, has helped me so much and I like him for this.</ttrRiderRanking:bio>

<ttrRiderRanking:bio>Interview taken in November 2007
Tell me about your day today.
My day today? My goodness. Really just doing anything today we just went out and rode one lift, and sessioned that run all day and it was amazing, I think it’s been quite a few years since I’ve had an all day powder session.

Ok, so this year you had to pull out of the Australian Open, with a little injury to your shoulder, what’s up with that?
Yeah, the shoulder has just been a reoccurring thing, but over the summer I’ve just been doing lots of strengthening exercises.

No over the summer you’ve been surfing...
……and some surfing. A little bit of surfing. But yeah. I dunno. Just took a break, made sure my body was healthy. But yeah! Ready to have fun again!

Fantastic! So really really big year last year with you. You won basically everything that was out there to win, tell me about your season.
Oh my goodness, It’s a big blur! It’s a really big blur because when people bring stuff up I’m like, "oh my goodness that did happen!" And going into this season, I’m like, “can I do it again?” hahaha, you know? It was just one thing after the other…first winning the X-games was huge, and then going on to the other contests and winning the whole TTR Tour and the Burton Global Open series.

That was actually some pretty good money right there!
Hahaha yeah.... bought me a beautiful house! Haha. It was an amazing season. So I’m just going into this season expecting to have a lot of fun and whatever comes out of it comes out of it.

And if there was any highlight from this season what about that be?
Winning the TTR Tour?

Would you like to win it again?
It would be nice to win it again, yeah, definitely.

And it was pretty exciting with the girls, Kelly after you the whole time, you actually had to catch Jamie Anderson, Jamie was an early season leader, for 14, 15 weeks on the tour. In that sense, was it something you aspired to do or did it just fall into place?
I think with me, the way things work best is if I don’t really think about it, so really it is just me wanting to have fun, and ride the way I know how to ride. So I guess everything just fell into place!

It’s been really cool to see the progression of female snowboarding, it’s been amazing.
Yeah over the past couple years it’s been incredible. There aren’t any really major standouts, cause everybody is pushing it.

Is that because of the fact that you girls are getting to compete with each other? Is it because there’s more support out there and more media coverage out there and more interest out there? Or is it just that you girls are getting better?
Maybe a little bit of everything? But lots of the girls are riding together, and are working on filming projects. It’s just about time that we did you know? Everybody is working hard and it shows!

But yeah it does show as well, cause I mean you see a 540 go down with a grab and a few years ago, a lot of the girls doing 540s did not have a grab. Now 540s with a grab, 720s, there are even some 9s coming out.
Yeah, Silvia Mittermueller …she does a pretty nice 9…haha. Yeah, it’s amazing.

And how do you go about actually pushing yourself to learn new tricks?
Well the thing I find hard for myself is finding the time between the contests to actually have that time to just try new things. But it’s really just having the time, and being in the right mind space to want to try things and get a little beat up and all those things. Yeah it’s just knowing that it needs to be done and just doing it!

Being an Australian, originally coming form Cooma, what’s it like winning the Tour when there’s not really much respect out there for the Australian Riders?
It’s growing for sure, it’s odd though, some people just look at me and say, you snowboard? And you’re form Australia? And Cooma of all places? But a few good things have come out of Cooma!

Ok so if we talk about the tour, we’re only about 100km away from Kaprun, That’ll be the site for the Roxy Chicken Jam, our first TTR SIX(6)STAR event of the season, pretty amazing level of riding there last year, tell me a bit about last year.
Yeah it was amazing, and I must say the Roxy Chicken Jam events both in Europe and in the States are the favourite events among the girls, cause it’s just all of the girls all there together, riding, and we just have a lot of fun together and ultimately I think that’s what pushes our riding - just all being there together, and having loads of fun and just seeing girls do things we’re just like, "oh they’re doing it? We can do it too!"

It’s good to have mix-gender events obviously. Do you think having that platform for all-women events is important?
Definitely, and I think it’s been the 4th year that it’s happened and it’s just getting bigger and better, I don’t think we could do a season without it now. But definitely love the mix gender events.

We’re close to Kaprun for the Roxy Chicken Jam. Are you doing a bit of stealth training?
I guess you’ll never know! No…we just came over because there was snow in the US! So we wanted to come over and get our legs back before the season started, and it just worked perfectly that the first event was here in Austria! But I’m sure we’ll head up to the glacier sometime and check it out before the event.

And at the end of the day, how do you feel Torah, about the way the TTR combines the formats halfpipe, slopestyle, quarterpipe, big air into one ranking system? Does that work? Is it a good way of defining who is the best professional freestyle snowboarder?
It is the way it should be! Definitely, because, to be considered a snowboarder, you gotta be able to ride it all I think, so it’s good that there’s halfpipe, slopestyle, quarter pipes and big airs.

Well lets talk about the quarterpipe actually, the biggest Mc Twist I’ve ever seen from a women was at the arctic challenge, I think that was like three years ago, and I was very jealous cause I’ve never gone that big in a quarterpipe. How was that experience?
I still regard that whole experience as probably one of my most memorable moments in snowboarding. Sometimes I see old footage from it and I’m like "oh my goodness, could I do it now?" It was just amazing.

Do we need to see more events that have access for the women to quarter pipes?
Yeah, I don’t think I’ve been in a quarterpipe contest since the Arctic Challenge - so definitely.

Ok, so we have the Roxy Chicken Jam coming up in about three weeks, and we have a busy schedule ahead of us. What are your plans for the rest of the season?
I think it’ll be very similar to last year just doing a lot of events on the TTR Tour, and doing the Roxy Chicken Jams and the Opens, then hopefully getting some time to film and shoot, and hopefully it all goes well with the body and it all holds up, so I can be snowboarding my way into the summer.

So you grew up in Cooma and are now residing in Salt Lake City, Utah. Is that because the snow there is better? Is it a better place to train? What was the decision behind that?
I moved there first after spending my first winter in the US in Mammoth. And I like mammoth but it was just really hard to travel from. It was like three hours to LA to fly. My sister, our eldest sister, was actually moving to salt lake on ski scholarship to the University of Utah and I was like, "gosh, why not move there?" I’ve got my sister, and lots of family around, and it just ended up being perfect, and I lived with her and my roommate was Erin Comstock and with her I’d go up to the mountains every day. It was just awesome. And we found it was just incredibly easy to travel from. So I've been there every since.

For our last question as we’re talking about family, how does the rest of the family see it? Did you always have snowboarding? Or did you just sort of fall into it?
Well we grew up in Cooma and hour form the mountains in Australia. And we started skiing when we were two, and cross country skiing, we were just always in the snow. I guess mom and dad said we fought a lot when we weren’t out. So we were always out just doing everything.

They’re stoked though?
Yeah I’m so happy they made us do all that...haha

Well, thank you very much.
Thank you for having me!

<ttrRiderRanking:bio>What’s not to love about Jamie Anderson? Great style, a determined attitude and she’s a winner. If there’s one undeniable fact about Jamie, it’s her ability to slay a contest and ride away a snowboarding champion. As it stands, Anderson of South Lake Tahoe, California, is the youngest rider to be crowned a Swatch TTR World Tour Champion and the 2007/2008 season was without doubt the defining year for the 19 year old. She bagged seven podium finishes including the 4Star Garnier Fructis Australian Open, 6Star Burton US Open and 6Star Roxy Chicken Jam Slopestyle Titles, all eventually leading to her Tour Championship title. Add to the mix a couple of X-Games gold medals and you have one of the most successful riders competing on the Tour.

The 2008/2009 season was a slightly different story for Jamie, and while it may not have yielded the same results as her previous efforts, she still managed to prove her resilience and resolve. The 2008 Southern Hemisphere showcased Anderson as the rider to beat. The 5Star Burton Australian and New Zealand Opens as well as the 3Star Billabong Snowstock 08 all saw her finish on the podium in both Slopestyle and Halfpipe competitions, claiming four titles out of the five results.

While Anderson has built a reputation as the most solid Slopestyle rider in the business, last season saw her progression climb dramatically, adapting to the demands of defending a Tour Championship title, resulting in early success in the Halfpipe. Anderson continued her success that season with a second place Slopestyle finish at the 5Star Nissan X-Trail Asian Open in Japan, but unfortunately it would be her last entry in the 08/09 tour as she succumbed to a mid season injury. While she may have been out of the championship title race, Jamie, with her high-points earnings in the early season, managed to finish third at the end of the season, setting herself up nicely for the current 2009/2010 Swatch TTR World Tour.

What exactly makes Jamie such a successful snowboarder? Three words: Versatility, style and raw talent. Ok, that’s four words, but the point stands that few rival Jamie’s tricks and board manipulation abilities. Her rail combos are buttery smooth and complex, and taking the bigger Slopestyle lines her spins are floaty, solid and offer more than your textbook 540. Her devotion to constantly out perform her opponents and progress in order to win is how she’s been able to build such an impressive competitive career.

Entering the 2009/2010 season we’ve already witnessed her success with a Slopestyle Title and Top 10 Pipe finish at the 5Star Burton NZO along with a 3Star Billabong BroDown Big Air Title. “I always love coming down to the Southern Hemisphere, good people, good town, definitely good to get a head start on the season… I’ll see how everything goes!” It follows a long list of competitions for Jamie, on and offside the TTR Tour. She does not only finish the slopestyle format of the Winter Dew Tour in the first place but also takes second place at the Winter X-Games. Back on the Swatch TTR Tour she proves her skills to her competitors again, and with a victory at the 6Star Roxy Chicken Jam US and a third place at the 6Star Burton US Open Slopestyle she managed to still become one of the hottest contestants for the TTR World Champion Title. In the end, however, it was Finnish Enni Rukajärvi who was crowned Champion after Jamie only placed 10th in the halfpipe of the Chicken Jam. Jamie finished her season in World No. 5. </ttrRiderRanking:bio>
