Sina Candrian
The confident Swiss rider, Sina Candrian, has been impressing judges and fans in the last couple years, climbing her way up the TTR Tour Rankings and ending her seasons in the Swatch TTR Top 10 for the last three years. Sina is a rider who turns heads as she pushes contest riding and progression.
Season 2009/2010 Sina is truly shining on the TTR Tour and by starting her seasons riding in the Southern Hemisphere events paid off, placing her to the Top 10 already in August, where she stayed comfortably ever since. A competition filled January finally saw her taking 5th place in the slopestyle at the 6Star Roxy Chicken Jam in Austria and repeating her 2nd place in front of cheering home crowds at BEO. Her solid slopestyle skills pushed her to rise the ranks into World No. 2, and now sitting in the TTR Top 5 has set her in a great position to go for the coveted No.1 spot.
A Burton team rider, Candrian chose to compete during the 2008/2009 only on the Burton Global Open series events, which all part of the TTR Tour bagged her some solid points and pushed her to end the season in World No.7 - one spot lower than her 2007/2008 placement. It is exciting to see that she knows her potential to succeed on the TTR Tour. And this year she is back with her signature motivation and is focused on the full range of events on TTR Tour.
The 09/10 season has been Sina's most successful yet on the TTR Tour finishing off in Swatch TTR World No. 2. After an only mediocre start for Candrian at the Burton New Zealand Open (18th and 16th place), Sina did a lot better in the Northern Hemisphere leg of the Tour. Despite Sina's preference of the slopestyle format, she took 10th place in the halfpipe of the O'Neill Evolution. Back to her favorite, the slopestyle format, Candrian continued with a 5th place at the Roxy Chicken Jam Europe and her first podium finish of the season with a 2nd place at the Burton European Open. After a victory of the first ever slopestyle FIS World Cup held in Calgary, Canada, Candrian took another podium finish at the 5Star Burton Canadian Open with a 3rd place. One of her biggest TTR successes yet outside Europe came in March 2010, when Candrian traveled to Stratton, USA, to take home the Burton US Open slopestyle title and 1000 Swatch TTR points. With her eyes glued to the TTR Tour Champion title, she competed at the last 6Star event, the Roxy Chicken Jam. With only a 16th place in the halfpipe and a 6th place in slopestyle, Sina missed the Tour Champion title by inches, finishing the season in World no. 2.
Candrian certainly has the style and skills to be the first Swiss competitor to take out a Swatch TTR Title. If she continues to progress like she has, it won’t be long before she is raising the Title high above her head, bringing it home for the Swiss.

INTERVIEW WITH SINA IN JANUARY 2010
Switzerland seems to bring out some good snowboarders that also perform excellent on the international level (e.g. Nicolas, Anne-Flore, Markus, Iouri, etc). Some are good on the TTR Tour, others are more known for their film parts or photos. What is the snowboard scene in Switzerland like?Is snowboarding a well accepted sport there?
It is nice to ride for Switzerland. We do have a good time for sure and we do a lots of trainings together. The focus of the Swiss team is more on riding pipe. So I do a lots of training with them in the pipe. On slopestyle I train with friends or by my own.
Switzerland has so much talent in snowboarding, amazing! Snowboarding is not that big in Switzerland as in other countries like USA or Norway. The national sports in Switzerland are ski, hockey and football, snowboarding is just a small part. In some circles snowboarding is a well accepted sport in other circles they think snowboarders aren’t really sportive and just wants to party all the time!
They don’t know that we can ride and focus hard on snowboarding and after the comp go party!
Who do you love to shred with? Who do you love to compete with?
I love to shred at home in Laax. I know all the terrain there. I like to shred with all kind of different people. Some of my friends are a lot in the park so couple of days I ride with the. My most famous snowboard buddy is Marco Widmer, he knows where the best powder is and he really pushes me to learn new tricks!
Can you say a couple of words about the TTR in general and what it means for snowboarding?
The TTR Tour means a lot for me. It is one of the best Tours in snowboarding. I like to have different competitions in one tour. So you can ride slopestyle, quarterpipe or pipe. If you would like to win the tour you have to be a good all rounder!
You are a constant competitor on the Swatch TTR Tour and at the Canadian Open 2010 you could event move into World No.1. What would the Swatch TTR World Champion title mean to you? Do you think you have what it takes to win it?
If I would win the TTR Tour a dream would come through. So it means a lot for me, that’s why I am focused on the TTR tour. Ending up on first you have to ride perfect in pipe and slopestyle. I think I have a good level on slopestyle but I have to learn riding pipe better!
How does filming fit into your competitive schedule? Is it difficult to film and compete in the same season? Which do you prefer and why? Any goals with filming or magazine coverage?
I never was filming, so I can’t really tell you. But I think it is really hard if you would like to have a good part in a movie and end up good at the tour. I prefer to ride the tour right now. Whenever I have the chance to go filming I will be super motivated!
What are your plans outside of the tour? Filming goals? Other non-TTR contests?
Outside of the TTR tour I like to ride for my self in the powder. Beside doing contest I do a lot of photo shootings. I really like to go big mountain snowboarding.
How do you feel about the progression of female riding, specifically in contests?
The progression is crazy in snowboarding right now. The girls are killing it right now and I’m lucky to be a part of it!
Do you think all-female contests are important? Should there be more? Or should events be mixed gender like the BEO, US Open..etc.
At the only girls competitions there is always an easy atmosphere. We riders push us to have a great final! And we don’t have to ride in the men’s shadow!
At the Opens we have always a perfect shaped pipe and slopestyle. It is nice to share it with the men. I like to ride with girls and boys so I prefer to ride the mixed contests.
Thanks for your time and good luck at the Canadian Open.
