Men's Snowboard World Champion 08/09: Peetu Piiroinen

After a nail biting final at the worlds most anticipated event, Peetu Piiroinen (FIN) beams with pride as the Swatch TTR Snowboard World Champion for 2008/2009. Throughout the entire season he has been steadily ascending the TTR ranks and secured the top place, finishing second in the 6Star Burton US Open Halfpipe competition.

Peetu Piiroinen is the only Finnish rider to become the Snowboard World Champion title since the TTR’s inception, a fact the fills him with elation. During the entire 08/09 season Peetu displayed his elegantly aggressive style across all contest formats. Amazing skills and clockwork presision ensured him seven Top 5 results throughout all of TTR's 6Star events. His win is testament to the fact that a rider needs to excel across all facets of snowboarding in order to be crowned Swatch TTR World Champion.

As soon as Peetu Piiroinen's 2008/2009 World Snowboarding Tour campaign kicked off at the 6Star Nissan X-Trail Jam, it was obvious that the unassuming young Finn was gunning for the Title. Peetu Piiroinen annihilated the Quarterpipe contest and blew everyone away with a BS 9 Cork during the Big Air finals. The combined results of the two formats earned him a second place finish and launched him into World No. 34 – ready to improve on his previous season World No.3 finish.

Peetu Piiroinen's
meteoric rise continued at the 6Star O’Neill Evolution. A fifth place finish in the Slopestyle served as a precursor to an epic finale on the Quarterpipe. It was here that Peetu Piiroinen would go head to head with close friend Risto Mattila (FIN). A true neck and neck showdown ensued with Peetu eventually laying down a monster BS 5 which would earn him his first 6Star Title. The win also bolstered his Snowboarding World Champion ambitions and rocketed him into World No. 5.

Peetu Piiroinen then rolled into Laax for the 6Star Burton European Open. The Slopestyle finals saw European and US Riders battling it out for crucial ranking points. Peetu Piiroinen constantly displayed calculated style and came in second to Danny Davis and this result, combined with his fifth place in the Halfpipe was enough to move him into World No. 2, the No.1 spot ready for the taking.

The 6Star Billabong Air & Style would prove to be the defining moment in Peetu’s 2008/2009 World Snowboarding Champion campaign race. He wowed the crowd with his lofty airs, and came in second with a smooth BS 5. The result was enough for him to overtake Chas Guldemond (USA) and move into World No.1, however with several major events remaining the race was far from over.

Following on from the Air & Style was the 6Star Oakley Arctic Challenge. Peetu
Piiroinen
sustained a minor injury and was unable to compete, however his lead was so great that no contenders could close the gap. Shaun White (USA) and others were still chasing the No.1 spot so Peetu Piiroinen retreated home to Finland and prepared for the final hurdle. The US Open was looming on the horizon and he still needed to maintain his composure and finish strong to take it out.

Under sunny Vermont skies, in a pristine Halfpipe, Peetu Piiroinen stepped up to fulfill his destiny. His determination shone through as he laid down a strong Halfpipe run to become the Swatch TTR Snowboarding World Champion and earn himself $50 000 USD. He qualified second in the Halfpipe Semis, then went on to finish in second position overall and earn his first ever Swatch TTR World Title. “It feels good, it feels good. I am the first Finnish guy to win that, so it’s super cool. I’m  so stoked.”, said Peetu after his win yesterday.

Previous Male Snowboard World Champions

2008 -  Snowboard World Champion Kevin Pearce (USA): After an incredible season winning 2 Air&Style rings of glory, the BEO HP, TAC - it was one simple gust of wind that almost cost Pearce the title against Shaun. Even though Shaun won both USO formats, Pearce could hold it together and came 3rd in the pipe. Due to 1 result missing on Shaun’s list of results he couldn’t capitalize and the title went to Kevin. Peetu Piiroinen also had his first appearance on the international TTR contest scene and consistent TOP5 finishes and several podiums at the big quarterpipe events paid out and let him jump to World Nr. 2 in the end.

2007 - Snowboard World Champion  Shaun White (USA): After Travis won the snowy slopestyle and Shaun only managed to come 3rd it came down to the pipe! Shaun won, while Travis got injured breaking his collarbone bailing on the last hit after a sick run and Mr. White became the first ever American TTR Champ. Antti Autti finished just outside the podium in both formats and held on to World Nr. 2 while Kevin Pearce finished in World Nr. 4 and earned his entry ticket to ride in 07/08 TTR events!

2006 - Snowboard World Champion Mathieu Crepel (FRA): It all came down to Risto and Mathieu battling it out in the HP final in Stratton - Mathieu finished 5th and Risto 6th in the pipe after both messed up in the slopestyle. The Frenchman had only 5 points more and won the first ever Tour title!
